TEETH WHITENING

Teeth whitening involves bleaching the teeth to lighten their color. After treatment, the teeth look a few shades whiter, but not usually bright white.

Teeth whitening is an optional procedure — it is very rarely a necessity.

RESTRICTIONS

Depends on the patient*

PROCEDURE OVERVIEW

Your dentist will first create molds of your top and bottom teeth. These are used to make customized trays, like a mouthguard, that fit over your teeth.

At your next appointment, a bleaching gel is put into the trays, which you wear in your mouth for 15 to 30 minutes. The dentist might also shine a light to speed up the whitening process. Often, the treatment is repeated at home, following the dentist’s instructions. You’ll probably notice a difference in 2 to 4 weeks.

Another option is to get a kit with the customized trays from your dentist and carry out the treatment at home.

BENEFITS

Teeth whitening can improve the appearance of discolored teeth. It is also cheaper than some other restorative procedures. However, make sure you find out about the cost, risks, and likely outcomes before going ahead with treatment.

The most common side effects, which are often temporary, include:

  • tooth sensitivity, especially from power bleaching
  • irritation of the gums

CANDIDATES

Teeth can be discolored by:

  • tea, coffee, red wine, or cola
  • smoking
  • excessive fluoride or tetracycline (an antibiotic) when the teeth are forming

If you are considering teeth whitening, you should consult your dentist to see if your teeth are suitable.

NOT RECOMMENDED

Teeth whitening is not recommended if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have sensitive teeth
  • have gum disease or shrinkage
  • have cracks or exposed dentine

Note: that whitening treatments will not whiten existing crowns, veneers, or fillings.

VENEERS

Dental veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells that are attached to the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance. They’re often made from porcelain or resin-composite materials and are permanently bonded to your teeth.

Better dental appearance

PROCEDURE OVERVIEW

It typically takes between 1 and 2 weeks after your dentist creates your mold to get your veneers back from the lab.

Once your veneers are in, you can schedule an appointment to have them placed. At this appointment, your dentist evaluates the fit, shape, and coloration of the veneers to make sure they’re perfect for you.

Next, your dentist thoroughly cleans your teeth. This is important, as it keeps bacteria from being trapped under the veneer and causing decay.

After they do this, they use the grinding tool to create a rougher texture on each tooth on which a veneer is to be applied. This makes it easier for the veneer to stick to the tooth.

Your dentist then uses dental cement to bond the veneer to the tooth. They’ll use ultraviolet light to harden this cement quickly.

This second appointment (where veneers are placed) typically doesn’t last longer than 2 hours. But it might vary depending on the number of veneers being done and if a local anesthetic is used.

BENEFITS

The biggest benefit to veneers is improving the appearance of your teeth, giving you a brighter and more even smile. Dental veneers are often used to treat the following cosmetic occurrences:

  • broken or chipped teeth
  • severe discoloration or uneven coloring that can’t be fixed with whitening
  • gaps in the teeth
  • smaller-than-average teeth
  • pointed or unusually shaped teeth

Veneers can last for more than a decade, depending on the type of veneer you choose, making them a semipermanent investment that can make you more confident in your smile.

CANDIDATES

Veneers can be used to treat a number of different cosmetic concerns, including chipped, broken, discolored, or smaller-than-average teeth.

dental crowns

A dental crown is a covering for an existing tooth. It can improve the way a decayed or broken tooth looks and make it stronger and longer lasting. Crowns are usually made from porcelain, ceramic, glass, or metal.

Protect your weak teeth

PROCEDURE OVERVIEW

The dentist will usually prepare the tooth by removing a layer of its outer surface. The crown will be the same thickness as the thickness of this removed layer.

To make a crown, the dentist takes a mold of the tooth and sends it away to a technician who will prepare the crown. It can often be matched to the color of the other teeth, so it will blend in.

You might be given a temporary crown to get you through until the permanent crown is made.

When the permanent crown is ready, the dentist fits it in place using dental cement or adhesive.

BENEFITS

Crowns are a way of protecting teeth that are weak or have been broken. They also help improve the appearance of teeth that are irregularly shaped or stained. Crowns can last many years if they are cared for properly.

But sometimes they break or fall off. This might be because the cement does not hold, or it might be because the tooth under the crown has decayed.

CANDIDATES

Dental crowns can be used to cover a broken or decayed tooth when too much of the original tooth is missing, such as after root canal treatment.

They are also used to protect a weak tooth from breaking, to cover stained or badly shaped teeth, or to hold a bridge or denture in place.

ORTHODONTICS

Orthodontic treatment is a way of straightening or moving teeth, to improve the appearance of the teeth and how they work. It can also help to look after the long-term health of your teeth, gums, and jaw joints, by spreading the biting pressure over all your teeth.

Improve appearance and bite

PROCEDURE OVERVIEW

The orthodontist will probably talk to you and examine your mouth and face. You might be asked to have x-rays or have plaster models of your teeth made.

They will discuss the treatment they recommend. Treatment often involves using appliances called braces to straighten crooked teeth or to correct problems with the bite.

There are many different types of braces, including the traditional metal type. Other types include clear or tooth-colored braces, braces worn on the inside surface of the teeth, and clear, removable ‘aligners’.

Wearing braces might feel strange in the beginning. If your discomfort doesn’t disappear, tell your orthodontist. They might be able to make adjustments.

BENEFITS

Orthodontic treatment can help improve appearance as well as bite. It can also help if you have problems with speaking, breathing, and chewing. Having straight teeth can prevent damage from a bad bite, prevent tooth wear, and improve the mouth’s health.

However, orthodontic treatment takes a long time and can be costly. As with anything new, it may take you some time to adjust to wearing braces and to learn how to take care of your appliance. Orthodontic treatment is not suitable if you have unhealthy teeth and gums. If you have braces, it is very important to clean your teeth properly and avoid too much sugary food and soft drink as this may lead to white spots on your teeth or tooth decay.

CANDIDATES

You might need orthodontic treatment for:

  • crooked teeth or teeth that stick out
  • a bad bite, which is how the upper and lower jaws meet when the mouth closes
  • poorly aligned jaw
  • gaps between the teeth
  • problems with speaking, breathing, or chewing

An orthodontist can also assess children’s developing teeth and jaws, and help manage thumb or finger-sucking habits.

HOW LONG

Treatment usually takes about 2 years. You will probably need to see the orthodontist regularly to get checked.

Many people will then need to wear some sort of device to keep their teeth in position for some years, or for the rest of their life. Teeth tend to move back to their original position over time. The device might be used only at night, or it might be used permanently. You can discuss this with the orthodontist.

ROOT CANAL

A root canal treatment is used to repair the damaged inside of a tooth. It is also called endodontic treatment.

Saving an infected tooth

PROCEDURE OVERVIEW

First, the dentist takes an x-ray of the tooth to see the shape of the root canals and determine whether there is any infection in the bone around the tooth.

A sheet of rubber called a rubber dam is placed over the tooth to prevent contamination. You will be able to breathe normally.

The dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth before drilling a hole in the tooth to remove the pulp. Each tooth has between 1 and 4 canals, depending on the tooth. All of the canals will be cleaned, shaped, and disinfected.

It can take several appointments for the dentist to clean and shape the hole inside the tooth before placing a sterile filling inside. Between treatments, they will seal the tooth with a temporary filling and may place a metal band around the tooth to protect it.

When the treatment is finished, they will fill the canal space with a material called gutta-percha. They may also insert small support into the root canals to strengthen the tooth. They may cap the tooth with an artificial crown if necessary.

Root canal therapy can be more uncomfortable than a normal filling because it takes longer, but it is often no more painful.

BENEFITS

A root canal treatment can save a badly infected or damaged tooth. The tooth may have become infected or damaged by decay, repeated dental work, wear and tear, gum disease, cracked fillings, or an injury to the tooth.

When the dental pulp is damaged, bacteria can start to multiply inside the tooth. This can lead to an infection or abscess, which is a pocket of pus that forms at the end of the tooth’s root.

Saving your own tooth if possible is important. It works better than an artificial tooth for biting and chewing. Losing a tooth can lead to other problems in the mouth. Replacing a lost tooth with an artificial one often needs more complex dental procedures. Root canal treatment is often the best way of saving a tooth.

CANDIDATES

Sometimes there are no symptoms that a tooth needs root canal treatment. More commonly, the signs include:

  • severe toothache when biting or chewing
  • sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts after the heat or cold has been removed
  • darkening of the tooth
  • swollen and tender gums
  • pus around an infected tooth
  • swelling of the face or neck
  • a loose tooth
